Guide to Typo3
This manual has been written as a guide and reference for the content editors of your website. It aims to provide you, as a content editor, with the necessary skills and knowledge required to manage this website.
Your website has been designed and developed using an open-source Content Management System (CMS) called Typo3.
A CMS is an application that allows you to control the structure and contents of a website through a simple web interface. The purpose of CMS is to make it easy for the user to edit content, without having to ask a web developer to do it.
What you see in TYPO3 we call the ‘back end’ of the site and what you see in your web browser we call the ‘front end’.
This web interface, the 'back end' or 'BackOffice (which is what we will refer it to) is a password-protected area of the website which can be accessed by using a simple web browser from any computer connected to the Internet.
Typo3 offers advanced content management features; because of this using the Typo3 BackOffice might seem daunting and overwhelming for new users.
The functionality and task-based approach used in this manual will provide you with a step-by-step guide allowing you to familiarise yourself with the BackOffice.
The Typo3 BackOffice is a restricted area for your website which allows you to control the structure and contents of the front end of the website. It can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection.
Accessing the Typo3 BackOffice
You can gain access to the Typo3 BackOffice by entering the following address in your web browser:
https://www.yourwebsite.com/typo3
Upon accessing the backend of your website, you will have to enter the HTTP Auth.
You will then be able to log in with your typo3 account username and password.
This page allows you to log into the Typo3 BackOffice by entering the user name and password you have been provided with. Please note that user names and passwords are case-sensitive. Also, in order to use BackOffice your web browser must have JavaScript and Cookies enabled. These features are usually enabled by default if you are in any doubt please consult the help manual of your web browser or refer to your IT support team.
There are a number of security considerations you should keep in mind once you have been assigned an account:
- You must keep your password secret.
- Do not share your user account with any of your colleagues.
After entering your username and password click the 'Login' button at the bottom of the page to gain access to the BackOffice. If all went well you should now be logged in, otherwise, the login page will be displayed again containing an error message explaining why the login process failed.
Should you forget your password, above the orange Login button is a ‘Have you forgotten your password?’ link. Click the link, enter your email address and you will be sent a link to reset your password.
